One Word Answer’s Tier 3 Maiden win at Shepparton today was only special for a handful of people and I am lucky to be one of them.
The emotion for One Word Answer's win today wasn't because of his ability, rather his name.
Affectionately named Otis by my three-year-old daughter, after a donkey in the children's book Thelma The Unicorn. And yes, we do have a Thelma. Story for another day…
The origin of the race name One Word Answer came from my dad – Otis' owner. Six years ago, my dad made a pretty iconic speech at mine and James' wedding.
The speech made mention of the very first time my very quiet husband met my equally as quiet father.
I'll let part of dad's speech cover the rest.
Now our not so little Otis man is no champion, but it was pretty special to watch my two children cheer their dad and Otis along to victory today.
Straight after Otis crossed the line, my daughter grabbed my phone to call her Pa to see if he watched the win too.
Its these moments that make me feel grateful for the sport we are in. It's the incidental conversations that come from our dogs racing with friends and family. These conversations are rarely about the money won or the times run. They are the start of a conversation which can go in any direction for any length of time.
Otis, like many racing greyhounds have a story behind their name. If you have a story behind the name of one of your greyhounds, email me at [email protected].
I also need to note how much my husband will hate the fact I wrote this article. His input and consent were not called upon and for that I am sorry.
