Tim O'Connor has outlined his selections and suggested game plan for tonight's eight-race card at MEP.
R1 – 6pm - TAB We're On Pace – 2240m
8 Our True Colours
4 Pete Mitchell
2 Pickle It
10 Our Kinky Boots
R2 – 6.31pm – 2Construct Trot – 1720m
4 Kissmeserena
6 Mielicki
10 Ewing
7 Paris Jamilla
R3 – 7.02pm – Australian Pacing Gold Pace – 1720m
11 Sir Jimmy
10 Really Whisky
7 Twisting By
3 Paradigm
Really Whisky's figure form looks pretty plain this preparation, but he's definitely going much better than that. Was well beaten but had some excuses at Kilmore and hit the line hard from back in the field prior in two runs at Melton. Needs the speed on, but fancy a small each-way play with more the place than the win.
BACK: 10 Really Whisky – 0.5 unit (win)/1.5 (place)
R4 – 7.37pm – Benstud Standardbreds Pace – 1720m
5 Compete
4 Steel Ruler
8 Spicy Major
11 Starzzz Destiny
(noting a small ownership percentage in The Only Decision)
Compete won a $50k event in his three-year-old season and trialed up nicely for his return to racing at Ballarat recently (beating Sir Jimmy – raced in race three). I fancy his chances of making a successful start to the new campaign.
BACK: 5 Compete – 2 units (win)
R5 – 8.12pm – Hyland Racing Colours 3YO Trot – 2240m
8 Rocky Valley
6 The Priestess
4 Distant Sun
1 Freight Shaker
R6 – 8.47pm – IRT 2YO Trot – 1720m
7 Vytis
4 Claudys Hero
9 Carla Pixie
8 Sky Flair
R7 – 9.22pm – Lionheart Security 2YO Trot – 1720m
4 Gatesys Gem
2 Commodus
3 Vera Lane
5 Sam Nien
Gatesys Gem was a powerful winner on debut back in April and her second to Commodus at a recent trial when she came from well back to be just beaten was impressive. Missed the overs early in the morning but still happily on top.
BACK: 4 Gatesys Gem – 1 unit (win)
R8 – Waste Sense 4YO and Older Maiden Pace – 1720m
1 How Sweet
5 Quick Decision
6 Sir Nippa
7 Baltic Halo
Tried for ages to make a case for one of How Sweet's rivals, but I simply couldn't. Based off her solid trial victory at Ballarat, she's clearly on top from the good draw.
BACK: 1 How Sweet – 5 units (win)

** A betting unit is typically a percentage of the total bankroll or the amount of money you are willing to risk on a particular bet – for example 1 unit is 10% of your bankroll, therefore with a $100 bankroll 1 unit equals $10.
