Mark Pitt holds a two-win lead over James Herbertson in the metropolitan drivers’ premiership heading into the final meeting of the season at Cranbourne on Saturday night.
Pitt, who took out the premiership in 2022, added to his tally with short-priced favorite Our Rocker ($1.05) in the $25,000 Alabar Vicbred Platinum Homegrown Classic Final (3YO Colts & Geldings) Final at Melton on Friday.
Meanwhile, the state's leading reinsman Herbertson, who is chasing his first metropolitan title, guided the Stewart-prepared filly Beat Sweet ($5) along the sprint lane to down stablemate and $1.33 favorite Tough Shaz in the 3YO Fillies Final.
Herbertson completed a winning double when he partnered Claudy An Gus to victory in the Lifestyle Communities Trot.
The Lisa Miles trained and driven Winnies Dream led all the way in the Haras Des Trotteurs Vicbred Platinum Homegrown Classic Trotting (3YO Trotting Fillies) Final.
Later in the afternoon, the Brad Angove-trained Kvintet Hill ($19) displayed the best manners to score an upset win in the Haras Des Trotteurs Vicbred Platinum Homegrown Classic Trotting (3YO Trotting Colts & Geldings) Final.
While Mark Pitt will be an interested onlooker from his home in Stanhope, Herbertson will be in action at Cranbourne with driving engagements in six of the seven races at the meeting. Four of those races are at metropolitan level and count towards the title.
The 24-year-old Herbertson has an unassailable lead in the state drivers' premiership with 367 wins and is well clear of Chris Alford on 203.
