Group 1 Kikuka Sho Preview 2023

The final leg of the Triple Crown takes place on Sunday and while no horse can win the treble, it’s invariably a very strong race.

The Japanese St Leger, known locally as the Kikuka Sho, has a very strong honour roll. Plenty of outstanding colts have won the race including Titleholder, Contrail, Kitasan Black, Epiphaneia, Gold Ship, Orfevre and Deep Impact.

Delta Blues also won the race in 2004 and would win the Melbourne Cup two years later.

All in all, eight colts have won the Triple Crown but unfortunately (for those who read our Japanese Derby preview), Guineas winner Sol Oriens was backed from $2.50 into $1.80 and probably should've beaten Tastiera and Damian Lane at Tokyo.

We see the pair clash again here over the 3000m at Kyoto and on peak rating, Sol Oriens comes out on top. His win in the Group 1 Satsuki Sho (2000m) was excellent at just his third start, running straight past Tastiera before being a touch unlucky at Tokyo.

He's had a lead up run and was rolled at $1.60 at Nakayama. He made a very wide run around the turn there and covered plenty of ground while the winner got a much better run.

He still closed off strongly into second there and while 3000m is a bit of a query, he's been strongest late in all his starts and is by Kikuka Sho winning star Kitasan Black.

I think he has to be the horse to beat off his SPs in the other Group 1s and we are getting a better price now at around $4.

No knocks on Tasitera who was given an outstanding Damian Lane ride to win the Derby. Comes here fresh which is fine and does draw much better than Sol Oriens who will be back near last.

Hearts Concerto is very handy but has proven himself to be a touch below the absolute best colts, third in the Tokyo Yushun at 25-1 and was just even first up at Hanshin.

Satono Glanz won that race, running to a new peak of 120 but was well beaten by Tastiera and Sol Oriens prior. Most of the others in the race fit into the same mould, having been tested at the top level and been found wanting. Obviously there can be plenty of improvement but they've a couple of lengths to find.

Happy to stick with Sol Oriens given his starting prices and trust he runs out a strong 3000m.
