Tasmanian racing's reputation of punching above its weight holds true regarding the annual Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

The 2024 instalment is imminent, with 140 lots set to go under the hammer at Quercus Park, Carrick, on Monday, 26 February.

Magic Millions made a five-year commitment to Tasmania and the Quercus Park venue ahead of last year's sale, which, in conjunction with the $1.5 million in prize money and bonuses offered annually under the Tasbred scheme, makes the Tasmanian sale enticing for breeders and buyers alike.

President of Tasbreeders, David Whishaw, says that the Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale is unique in its offering.

"You go back to horses like Triple Asset, Lady Lynette, Igimacool, Hot Dipped and more recently Turk Warrior, Still A Star, Mystic Journey and Deroche; every year, there is a good horse out of the sale," Whishaw said.

"A lot of the very best horses from the sale each year are sold for less than the sale average, and with the Tasbred bonus structure down here, you can often return your investment just by winning a maiden."

This Sunday's Launceston card is an example of the incentives offered for Tasbred horses, with the Magic Millions 4YO Handicap (1600m), a $50,000 race for eligible horses.

Tasracing has recently added another of these races to the calendar, with a 1400m Tasbred race scheduled for Hobart on 4 April.

19 vendors and 57 different sires will be represented in the 2024 Magic Millions Sale, and David Whishaw says that while the rumour mill has been a bit quieter than usual, there are a few that will likely garner plenty of attention.

"Alva Stud is presenting a half-sister to Still A Star and D'oro Star (lot 68), which should generate plenty of interest on paper.

"We (Armidale Stud) have a half-sister to Deroche who is outstanding (lot 15).

"I've heard that there is a nice Earthlight in the Brookview Stud draft (lot 60)."

Tasbreeders, in conjunction with Aushorse and Thoroughbred Breeders Australia, are running a free workshop for trainers on Marketing & Communications ahead of this year's sale.

The event is this Friday at Quercus Park, and more information can be found here.

Monday's sale will be streamed via the Magic Millions website.
