With two 3YOs in this year’s Cox Plate, we look at their record in the past 30 years.
James Cummings won't be the first member of his family to start a three-year-old in a Cox Plate off an unplaced run in the Caulfield Guineas when he runs Broadsiding in this Saturday's $5 million event at Moonee Valley.
Cummings' grandfather Bart famously did it with So You Think, who won the 2009 edition at just his fifth start after finished fifth in the 1600-metre Guineas.
In the process, So You Think might have created an unfair comparison for other high-profile three-year-olds who head to the Cox Plate off an unplaced run in the Guineas.
It wasn't long after Broadsiding worked home to finish a 1-1/4-length fourth as $1.80 favourite in the Guineas that his run started earning comparisons to So You Think's Guineas effort.
It should be noted, though, that similar happened last year with Militarize after he finished fifth as $2.60 favourite in the Guineas.
Militarize started $8.50 in the Cox Plate and finished eighth, 2-1/4 lengths from winner Romantic Warrior.
That is the type of fate that awaits most three-year-olds who attempt the Cox Plate off an unplaced final lead-up run.
Of the 41 three-year-olds who have contested the Cox Plate in the past 30 years, eight were unplaced at their previous start – all of them through the Guineas – with So You Think the only winner.
The only other to place was Viscount, who ran third in 2001 after finishing 11th in the Caulfield Guineas.

So You Think is one of four three-year-old Cox Plate winners in the past 30 years with Savabeel the only one who was a last-start winner, having won the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m).
Octagonal and Shamus Award won their Cox Plates after a third placing in the Caulfield Guineas.
Joining Broadsiding as the three-year-olds in this year's Cox Plate is this year's Caulfield Guineas third placegetter Evaporate.
He's the rougher of the two three-year-olds, a $21 chance on Wednesday afternoon, which is the same price Shamus Award was the year he won.
So You Think was $14 and Savabeel $15 with Octagonal ($8.50) the three-year-old winner at single-figure odds.
The Cox Plate has been a good race for punters in recent years with Shamus Award the only winner at longer than $8 since 2012 with seven of the past nine editions having gone the way of the favourite.
Prognosis is $3.30 favourite for this year's event ahead of Via Sistina ($4.40), Pride Of Jenni ($4.60) and Broadsiding ($6).
