The story behind Half Yours, Maher and the McEvoys

By Connor Scanlon

The 2025 Melbourne Cup winner Half Yours is owned and trained by Tony and Calvin McEvoy, but that wasn’t always the case.

The five-year-old by St Jean was originally trained and partially owned by champion trainer Ciaron Maher.

Maher trained Half Yours to two victories from five starts, before the horse went up for sale as a young four-year-old.

The McEvoys with their ownership group managed to pick up the relatively untested horse with a $305,000 bid, beating out Maher who was the underbidder.

Looking back in hindsight, the 30-time Group 1 winner admitted on SENTrack & RSN’s Giddy Up that he would love to still be training Half Yours.

“It was a great story,” Maher said.

“They (the McEvoys) did a super job with him. Obviously, I would still like to be training him.

“We were (the underbidder), we were bidding away there - fair play to them.

“Those moments you relive, but look, he's a good horse. He always had ability, and they've managed him well.

“So, fair play to them.”

When asked if Half Yours has exceeded all expectations, the champion trainer admitted the answer is obvious.

“It's probably no surprise,” Maher said.

“Well, it's not a surprise to how he's gone.”

Since the McEvoy's purchased Half Yours for $305,000, the gelding has won five races and accumulated $7,931,000 in prize money.
