“It’ll p*ss in”: Melham confident 3YO will win next start
By Connor Scanlon
Planet Red finished second behind Observer in the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m), but despite the loss, the son of Admire Mars was super impressive.
The Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr-trained gelding, who was ridden by Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Jamie Melham, spent majority of the race in last place before surging wide around the field to bolt home.
When Kent Jnr was asked what Melham’s post-race comments were, she admitted that Planet Red will dominate his next start.
“She came back and she said, ‘Wherever this goes next, it'll p*ss in,’” Kent Jnr told RSN’s Correct Weight.
“I said, ‘Well, it's going to the Group 1 Australian Guineas.'
“She said, ‘Oh, it doesn't matter.'
“She was very impressed because she felt it was very hard to get out so wide and come from the back and launch like he did.”
With the co-trainer confirming that the three-year-old will be heading to the million-dollar Australian Guineas (1600m), Kent Jnr is sure that his chestnut is a top three chance in that Group 1.
“We would have been happy for him to run third or fourth (in the Autumn Stakes),” Kent Jnr said.
“It was probably the right prep run for the Guineas in three weeks' time.
“He's pulled up enormous because he had a soft run early, and then just flew home (the last) 600m.
“So, I think we're well poised to give that race a real shake.
“Obviously, the mile will suit - he ran out a strong mile in the Caulfield Guineas when the pace was on.
“I think he's a genuine top three chance in that race.”
Planet Red is at $8 with Sportsbet to win the Australian Guineas on February 28.
