Whateley: Who the new best horse in Australia is
By Connor Scanlon
With the retirement of Via Sistina, the throne of the best horse in Australia has a vacant position.
SEN’s Gerard Whateley believes we may have the new queen – the unbeaten Autumn Glow.
The daughter of The Autumn Sun is now nine wins from nine starts, most recently winning the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) last Saturday.
Reflecting on who the number one horse in the country is, Whateley revealed Autumn Glow is his pick.
“The retirement of Via Sistina opened the title for the best horse in the country, and at any given time you have to be able to name the best horse in the country,” Whateley told SEN’s Whateley.
“I think Autumn Glow is now the answer.”
Whateley questioned expert racing analyst David “Gator” Gately on whether he believes that the Chris Waller-trained mare is Australia’s top horse, leaving Gator to admit that Autumn Glow is definitely in the conversation.
“Look, she's got a seat at the table,” Gately answered.
“I mean, she does have a way to go, but the reality is she's done all she can do if you’re nine from nine.
“There's plenty of substance on the clock to back her up - she ran home faster than Joliestar on the day, a proper proven Group 1 performer.
“As a younger athlete, she didn't really quicken in her races, she took a bit of time to wind up, but she'd get stronger and stronger, which is obviously a fabulous trait to have, but it left her vulnerable to be beaten if her jockey didn't get it right.
“This time in, one run down, she's quickening, she's improved, she's got that better aerobic capacity to maintain that speed but still finish off.
“I've answered the question extremely long-windedly, but she's got a good seat at the table.”
