SENTrack and RSN’s Gareth Hall has paid tribute to the late, great Makybe Diva.

The legendary mare passed away on Saturday at the age of 27 after a sudden health battle with colic.

She amassed over $14.5 million in prize money across her career and won three consecutive Melbourne Cups between 2003 and 2005, plus the Cox Plate in 2005.

Read Hall’s tribute to the legendary Makybe Diva below:

“She was something else because the Melbourne Cup is our greatest race, and to win it on three occasions was remarkable,” Hall said on RSN’s Correct Weight.

“One of the greatest interviews that I've ever seen in any sport after a victory was Lee Freedman, when he mentioned in that interview (after the third Melbourne Cup victory), go down and see the youngest person on this track because they're the only person that might see this again.

“And I don't think we'll ever see it again, like a horse to turn up and win a Melbourne Cup for three straight years, and just the way she did it as well - the second year she defeated one of the greats in Vinnie Roe.

Glen Boss gave her 11 out of 10 rides in every Cup.

“The drama after she won the Cox Plate going into the Melbourne Cup for the final time, whether she would run or not… Tony Jones would always tell the story about how they had to send a helicopter out to the training facility where Lee Freedman was training, just to see her work that day.

“And then Glen Boss explaining that she never worked better. She ran up that hill like she'd never done before, and he said the Melbourne Cup's all over, I don't care what weight she carries.

“To do that final Melbourne Cup victory with the 58kg on her back; she was truly remarkable, and a great, great horse.

“She did it at weight-for-age as well, winning that Cox Plate.

“She'll be remembered forever, and her legacy will live on forever. No one will do what she did at Flemington in those three years.”
