By Connor Scanlon

Champion trainer Chris Waller has multiple chances in this year’s edition of the $5 million Golden Slipper (1200m), including Campione D’Italia, Fireball and Hidrix.

Campione D’Italia is a colt by Snitzel, who is one win from two starts in his career, most recently winning the Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m).

Another son of Snitzel, Fireball, won his first two starts of his career, but fell to stablemate Campione D’Italia in the Skyline.

While Hidrix is a colt by Extreme Choice, who is one win from three starts, winning his debut race but losing his two recent runs.

With three key chances to win the two-year-old Slipper on Saturday, Waller has broken down those winning chances on SENTrack & RSN’s Giddy Up.

“They're pretty even,” Waller revealed.

“We've got Campione D'Italia - he's probably the one with a bit of wow factor, but he's got to do things right.

“So, we're banking on there being good speed in the Slipper, as you'd expect, and him do things right and then be strong at the end.

“We've got Hidrix, who was brilliant first-up, a little bit disappointing last start when we rode him a bit closer and with blinkers on.

“He galloped this morning without the blinkers. Kerrin McEvoy, who rides him on Saturday, said he was sharp, responsive, and felt great.

“So, we'll ride him a bit quieter (in the Slipper).

“And Fireball, he galloped with Hidrix, and had blinkers on. He worked very well.

“So, all three of them have worked well this morning - that's their final piece of fast work.

“It's just that they all need luck, but probably every horse in the Slipper needs luck this year.”

Campione D’Italia is currently Waller’s best chance in the market to win the Group 1 Slipper at $13 with Sportsbet, while Fireball is $19 and Hidrix is $26.

The barrier draw for the Golden Slipper will be held on Tuesday.
