Waller: Aeliana’s best is still 12 months away

We could have another scarily good Chris Waller mare on the horizon.

Aeliana started her career on fire as a three-year-old winning four of her first 10 runs, highlighted by a Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) victory.

However, the daughter of Castelvecchio went quiet in the spring of 2025 when returning as a four-year-old, failing in all four of her runs.

But she has bounced back this autumn, winning Saturday's Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) having finished second in both the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Verry Elleegant Stakes (1800m).

The only horse to beat the mare this autumn is her stablemate Autumn Glow, who is widely regarded as Australia’s best current horse by many pundits.

Waller reckons she still has a very good career ahead as she continues to mature.

“Her absolute best might still be six to 12 months away,” the master trainer told RSN's Correct Weight.

“I think you'll see longevity out of her, and she'll retire with a pretty illustrious career.

“So from that perspective, I think she’s still at the beginning.”

Regarding whether her next run will be in the Group 1 Tancred Stakes (2400m) at Rosehill or Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick, the trainer admitted he isn’t quite sure yet.

He explained that the decision will most likely depend on which race Autumn Glow heads to, as Waller wants to separate his star mares.

“It depends where Autumn Glow’s going to go,” revealed Waller.

“We'll try and make that decision midway through this week. If Autumn Glow is going to the Queen Elizabeth, there would be a stronger push towards running Aeliana in the Tancred.

“But it obviously probably rules out the Queen Elizabeth, so I don't know.”

Aeliana is currently the $2.50 favourite for the Tancred on March 28, while she is the $3.20 second favourite behind Autumn Glow for the Queen Elizabeth on April 11.

Could Aeliana join the likes of Waller's legendary mares Via Sistina, Verry Elleegant and Winx over the course of her career?
