Would Autumn Glow or Sheza Alibi win across 1600m at WFA?
By Connor Scanlon
The debate for the best horse in Australia has heated right up after Autumn Glow lost her undefeated streak in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth (2000m) on Saturday.
Prior to the loss, the daughter of The Autumn Sun was widely regarded as the country's top horse, but now Sheza Alibi has a strong claim to the title, coming off one of the most impressive Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) victories in racing history, winning by 4.29 lengths.
The two girls are the clear top seeds, but the question beckons: Would Autumn Glow or Sheza Alibi win across 1600m at weight-for-age?
Expert racing analyst Clint Hutchison sided with the filly over the distance, as he believes she could run a stronger 2000m than the mare.
“It's a very tough call, but I’d say I'd be with Sheza Alibi,” Hutchison told SENTrack & RSN's Giddy Up.
“The thing with Sheza Alibi is I'm pretty sure she would be better over 2000m… I thought (Autumn Glow) would get 2000m.
“I mean the way she relaxes in the run and how good she's been late in her races. You don't see horses do what she did in the in the Doncaster, do you? It was quite remarkable; you've got to be special to do that.
“When Jamie Melham is interviewed straight after (the Doncaster) and says, ‘I've never had a horse give me a feel like this horse just gave me’, you have to take notice.”
Top tipster David Gately also agreed with Hutchison’s Sheza Alibi prediction.
“If they're racing next week, I'd probably lean slightly to Sheza Alibi,” Gately said.
However, trainer Wayne Hawkes couldn’t agree with the two racing analysts.
Hawkes explained that the formerly undefeated mare’s versatility is what makes her such a dangerous threat, whereas Sheza Alibi’s backmarker style is a racing pattern which makes the filly more likely to be beat.
Hall: “Who would you back right now – Sheza Alibi or Autumn Glow, weight-for-age, over the mile.”
Hawkes: “Autumn glow.”
Hall: “Interesting that Hutchy (Clint Hutchison) and Gator (David Gately) both said Sheza Alibi.”
Hawkes: “That’s ok, everyone’s allowed their opinion.”
“We don't know where Sheza Alibi is in theory because she's a three-year-old filly that's had a really light weight and did the job amazingly well. It probably nearly would be as good a performance of the autumn as what we've seen.
“We don't know where her ceiling is.
“With Autumn Glow, she's ticked another box, we know she doesn't like 2000m, but she's a freaky horse, she can race up on the pace, off the pace.
“You know, if Sheza Alibi draws (barrier) 16, you're going back. I'd like to see if she draws barrier 3 whether she can really go forward and take a real forward spot because you're going to get beat more times than what you win if you're a dead set back marker.”
Gareth Hall doesn’t believe the pair will meet in the upcoming Spring Racing Carnival, but may potentially face off against each other next autumn.
