Giants rewrite the record books with a third quarter for the ages
By Nicholas Quinlan
Giants by name. Giants by nature.
GWS has rewritten the V/AFL history books on Sunday afternoon, having managed to destroy the Brisbane Lions thanks to a record-breaking third quarter performance.
Having lost to West Coast the previous week, the Giants had plenty to prove on Sunday against the reigning premiers.
And after a tight first half, the Orange Tsunami just had their noses in front going into the main break.
But following the half-time break, the shackles were unlocked with the Giants going berserk.
Their slender six-point lead was quickly doubled within the first minute, with Phoenix Gothard getting on the scoreboard for the first time this afternoon.
From there, the scoring avalanche would only get bigger with the next six goals going the way of the Giants, courtesy of Jake Stringer, Aaron Cadman, Brent Daniels, Toby Greene and Gothard once again.
Some GWS fans would have still felt nervous despite the healthy lead, given they had surrendered a 44-point lead to the same opposition in the 2024 semi-final.
But the Giants continued to put the pedal to the metal, proceeding to push the margin out of reach for the reigning premiers to a high of 90 points.
And with Jake Stringer's third goal for the quarter and the Giants' 14th, it would take the side past the previous record for the highest third-quarter score set by Essendon against the Western Bulldogs in 1982.
Stringer would end up leading the scoring front alongside his captain in Greene, with both kicking five goals for the match.
The men in orange, charcoal and white would end up losing the fourth quarter, but the damage was already done, having run out 78-point victors.
Their score of 166 would break their previous highest score of 162 against Essendon back in 2023.
The win boosts the club's percentage from 90.1% to 98.6% as they now sit just outside of the wildcard places in 12th place on the live ladder.
GWS will next feature in the top end when they play the Demons in Alice Springs next Sunday.
