Matt Reid’s Wednesday best bets at Devonport (12/08)

The Devonport Racing Club hosts its first meeting of the 2026/27 season at Ladbrokes All Weather Spreyton on Wednesday.

The $50,000 Golden Mile is the feature and affords the winner ballot-free entry into the 2027 Ladbrokes Devonport Cup.

Best bet

Race 5 – 1. City Wok

City Wok landed some good bets when he won at his first Tasmanian start, and I think he can repeat the dose. His first-up win over 1150m was with authority, beating Brutal Empire, who is a key chance for one of the early races on this program. He draws for the run of the race from the 1350m starting point, and the extra distance looks suitable given he placed at a mile for the previous stable.

Next best

Race 7 – 9. Garcon D’espoir

The feature of the day can see the up-and-coming Garcon D’espoir announce himself as a Devonport Cup contender. The 5yo finished fourth in this race last year behind Sushi Express, and 11th in the 2026 Devonport Cup, but I think he’s a bigger and better horse this time in. He could easily be undefeated; instead, he finished second on three occasions, all by narrow margins. He gets big weight relief from recent runs, and Jett Stanley comes back to Tasmania for the ride.

Best value

Race 3 – 1. Just Plain Nuts

Just Plain Nuts was a black book run first-up at this track, where he ran fourth after being wide for the trip from a poor barrier. I think his last start in Hobart equally had excuses, caught on a hot speed, and drawing low on a day where the inside was off. He draws ideally for the return to Devonport, with a stack of speed drawn wider on the track. Keen to have something each-way.
