YES or NO: The horses that can and can't win the P.B. Lawrence
By Connor Scanlon
Expert form analyst Mark Hunter has taken a look at the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday.
He has broken down each horse in that race, runner by runner.
P.B. Lawrence
Hunter believes that the nine-year-old gelding Private Eye will take out the $300,000 race, referencing the Joe Pride-trained gelding’s form at the track/distance!
“I'm going to tip Private Eye. Two starts, two wins at the track,” Hunter started on SENTrack & RSN’s Giddy Up.
“I would love to see Regal Zeus (be scratched), as Private Eye will go forward. Nash (Rawiller) will do what Nash does, he'll just completely control the race.
“He’s had the one trial back, looked to go quite ok. I think he will go forward, control the race, give a great kick, and he’s going to be mighty hard to run down.”
Hunter also identified Evaporate and the favourite Cosmic Crusader as potential winning chances.
“Evaporate, he's a good horse,” continued Hunter.
“He was a bit ratty in that recent trial; he missed the kick and wanted to be fierce going through the field. Once he finally balanced up, he trailed quite well.
“He wouldn't want to miss the start here and get out the back, that would make his task a lot harder.
“Cosmic Crusader, look, he can win. He beat Winnasedge and Recommendation last time, which is not exactly top shelf, but he’ll be suited by 1400m and has got that race fitness on its side.
“So, the three obvious, I would think are Private Eye, Evaporate and Cosmic Crusader.”
The expert analyst also threw up the Ben, Will & JD Hayes-trained Coeur Volante as a place hope.
“I think Coeur Volante will run well,” admitted Hunter.
“Getting back onto a wet track, going forward with no tempo in the race for Jamie Melham will let her run a good race.
“I'm just not sure it can win but maybe place best there.”
Hunter also provided a YES or NO rating for each horse in the Group 2.
