Group 1 Gurus: Who to back in the Caulfield Guineas & why?

By SENTrack & RSN

Group 1 racing returns to Caulfield this week to kick off the Caulfield Cup Carnival.

The Caulfield Guineas for three-year-olds will headline the meeting, and it is set to show us the colts and fillies who could become stars in the future!

The $3 million race which is run across 1600m under set weight conditions has been won by Autumn Boy last year (2025), followed by Private Life (2024), Griff (2023), Golden Mile (2022) and Anamoe (2021).

The 2026 edition consists of a talented field, headlined by the Golden Rose winner, Warwoven, who is looking to prove himself again in his first start at 1600m.

Check out our tips and predictions for the Caulfield Guineas below!

Caulfield Guineas

Winner: WARWOVEN

Top 4: Warwoven | Blind Raise | Diameter | Somethings Burnin'

Why: How could you go past Warwoven? Short, yes, but justified.

The Golden Rose is an elite form reference – all we need to do is look at how last year’s winner Beiwacht has continued to improve since that victory.

Only query on Warwoven is this will be his first race on the Caulfield track. Apart from that, the colt appears to be primed for 1600m.

Blind Raise also appears as an elite place chance. 1600m is right up his alley, and he also performed excellent on the Caulfield track last start as well.

I’m also a fan of the top two coming out of the Stutt Stakes – Diameter and Somethings Burnin’. While they’re at long odds, they must be considered for exotics. Out of the last 81 Stutt Stakes winners, 40.7% have placed.

Winner: WARWOVEN

Top 4: Warwoven | Blind Raise | Diameter | Somethings Burnin’

Why: It’s awfully hard to go past Warwoven after his dominant Golden Rose win which is the prime lead-up form for the Guineas.

He should get a nice run from barrier 6 and will prove too strong for his opposition.

Blind Raise is the clear danger. Will be on speed and certainly capable of winning.

Diameter and Somethings Burnin’ ran the Stutt quinella and are in the mix to run a drum.

Winner: BLIND RAISE

Top 4: Blind Raise | Central Europe | Wolf Gap | Diameter

Why: Now this is a much better contest than the Might And Power.

I am going to side with Blind Raise, Caulfield often has its way to expose first timers, so I am against Warwoven.

Central Europe has James McDonald’s backing, and I think the rise to 1600m will also suit the Colt to run really solid and potentially grab this elusive maiden win.

Wolf Gap has shown immense speed as a back marker but has had no luck, I think he gets a bit more luck in this one, but it won’t be enough.

I think Diameter is over the odds in this market, and last start’s win was ultra impressive.

We also analysed the other two Group 1s at Caulfield – the Might And Power Stakes (2000m) and Toorak Handicap (1600m).

Check out our tips and predictions for those two Group 1s below!

Might And Power

Winner: SHEZA ALIBI

Top 4: Sheza Alibi | Birdman | Treasurethe Moment | Kingswood

Why: Do I even need to explain myself.

Sheza Alibi is a freak. 2000m shouldn’t be an issue for this mare.

Birdman is the only one who could steal the race from her.

Sheza is the very obvious horse to beat.

Connor Scanlon

Winner: SHEZA ALIBI

Top 4: Sheza Alibi | Birdman | Kingswood | Treasurethe Moment

Why: Can’t wait to see this absolute star out to 2000m.

Sheza Alibi is a proper weapon and should be winning this, although it’s her first go at the distance.

Birdman will be the one sweating on any Sheza hiccups. Exacta horse.

Kingswood is a great chance to run top three and Treasurethe Moment will be thereabouts.

Andrew Slevison

Winner: SHEZA ALIBI

Top 4: Sheza Alibi | Birdman | Treasurethe Moment | Kingswood

Why: Let’s not overcomplicate this, Sheza wins and wins easy.

Birdman coming off an awesome win in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes will once again run well, but he is not on the star filly’s level.

I think Treasurethe Moment is the next best in the field, but she really needs to show a glimpse of her best sooner rather than later.

I don’t have a strong opinion on who will round out the first four considering the size of this field, I’ll side with Kingswood.

Toorak Handicap

Winner: REGAL AWARD

Top 4: Regal Award | Lady Shenandoah | Changing Colours | Salty Pearl

Why: This is a very tough race.

History says horses carrying 52kg struggle to win this Group 1 since the year 2000, therefore we can cross Changing Colours off the list.

Evaporate has never won a race at Caulfield in his 10 starts there. Cross.

Warnie also doesn't like the track. No wins from five starts. Cross.

Regal Award is the fan of the track, and if he jumps well, he very well could get the job done. Tick.

Lady Shenandoah is a classy mare, and J-Mac jumps on board. Tick.

Salty Pearl has a decent track record. Throw in for exotics.

Connor Scanlon

Winner: REGAL AWARD

Top 4: Regal Award | Welcometotheshow | Changing Colours | Salty Pearl

Why: Open Toorak with plenty of chances.

Regal Award was good behind Angel Capital and Sepals when first-up in the Sir Rupert Clarke. Maps to sit near the speed. Can win.

Also siding with Welcometotheshow who was excellent in his Flemington win over 1400m.

Has won three from four at the mile, gets in at 52kg and can blend in from gate 6 before unleashing. Great value.

Throwing winning machine Changing Colours and Salty Pearl in the mix.

Andrew Slevison

Winner: CHANGING COLOURS

Top 4: Changing Colours | Welcometotheshow | Sabaj | Regal Award

Why: The hardest race to tip in my opinion.

Changing Colours four straight wins, and last starts was especially impressive, carrying 52kg, she is my pick.

Welcometotheshow just knows how to run well and is carrying another light weight of 52.5kg, genuine chance.

Sabaj trained by Price and Kent Jr should run well, and the confidence of Mick Kent Jr on Stable Mail is enough for me to include in my trifecta.

Regal Award was solid first up, and has trialed enormously this prep. He will run solid.
