The Group 2 Hebert Power Stakes notoriously hasn't been an excellent form guide for the Lexus Melbourne Cup, but this spring it could be a different story.

A couple of the Cup’s hopefuls ran enormously at Caulfield race last weekend from the back of the field.

“There were two great Melbourne Cup trials,” Nick Noonan said on RSN’s Correct Weight.

Shockletz, in what proved to essentially be a Melbourne Cup trial, was super when motoring home late to run an impressive sixth.

“Shockletz, geez, she’s putting a hoof on the till for the Melbourne Cup, isn’t she?," Nick said.

“She’s just in flying form. That was exactly the perfect lead-up for them, in a fast run 2400m.”

Travis Noonan shared this opinion:

“I thought Shockletz was terrific from the back of the field,” he said.

“She gets a big tick.”

The other ultra impressive run was Grahame Begg’s stayer Zakouma, who similar to Shockletz, blasted home from the back of the field.

“Zakouma was outstanding from the back of the field,” Nick said.

“Zakouma gets a tick,” replied Travis.

“They (Shockletz and Zakouma) are right on track.”

Both Shockletz and Zakouma gained entry into the Melbourne Cup through respective ‘golden ticket’ races.

Shockletz and Zakouma are both currently quoted at $13 to win the Lexus Melbourne Cup, all prices thanks to Sportsbet.

Plenty of praise was also directed to 2024 Melbourne Cup winner Knight’s Choice and Chris Waller’s new stayer on the block Pinhole.

“Knight’s Choice, if he runs in the Caulfield Cup, he’ll give it a little bit of a shake as well, the old boy,” said Travis Noonan.

“He was terrific.

“Pinhole also gets a tick. It will be interesting to see where they go next. Maybe the Moonee Valley Cup?”

Knight’s Choice is $34 for the Caulfield Cup this Saturday whilst Pinhole is confirmed by Waller to not accept.
