Sheza beatable? O’Neill’s brave Golden Eagle call

By Andrew Slevison

Sheza Alibi is all the rage for this Saturday’s $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m) at Randwick.

The Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman-trained mare is a hot favourite to take out the lucrative Group 1 feature in Sydney.

But one prominent thoroughbred owner, John O’Neill, reckons there is a chance she can be knocked off again.

Sheza Alibi went under as a $1.40 chance to Land Legend in the Might And Power at 2000m at Caulfield on October 10 and now drops back to the 1500m of the Golden Eagle.

While O’Neill concedes Sheza Alibi is a gun galloper, he’d rather be with Ciaron Maher’s import Amazing Journey who races for the first time in Australia

“I think Ciaron will win the race with Amazing Journey,” O’Neill said on SENTrack & RSN’s Giddy Up.

“Make sure you have something each-way on. It’s a very good horse.

“I think Sheza Alibi’s a ripper. She broke a track record the other day, so she’s obviously peaked. I know she was beaten.

“She’s got to come back from breaking a track record (along with Land Legend) over that distance (2000m), back to 1500m. I’m not saying she won’t win, she’s a very good horse.

“But I’d rather be having something on at $3.30 the place or something each-way Amazing Journey.

“There’s no doubt Sheza Alibi is a star, but that horse of Ciaron’s is a very good horse.”

Amazing Journey, out of Starspangledbanner, has won five of his 11 career starts in the UK including his last two at Ascot in July.

Giddy Up host Gareth Hall and O’Neill then quickly assessed the other feature races coming up this weekend at Flemington on Derby Day and Randwick on that Golden Eagle card.

Other weekend features

Victoria Derby

Hall: “I’m with Stormy Marco.”

O’Neill: “Hierarchy ran really well. I think True Rebel will run well and I think Skua was a good run too.

“There’s a horse at a big price that had no luck at Caulfield on that leader’s track - Russian Rock. If it goes there have something each-way.”

Coolmore Stud Stakes

Hall: “The Next Episode for me.”

O’Neill: “Only two hopes, the two ion the market - The Next Episode and Satono Glow.

“Satono Glow is airborne and goes down the straight, but I think The Next Episode will win.”

Empire Rose

Hall: “Will Lady Shenandoah win the Empire Rose now (Pride Of Jenni is out)?”

O’Neill: “Would have thought, yep.”

Hall: “I’m with Lady Shenandoah.”

Coming up

They also had a look forward to races later in the week at Flemington.

VRC Oaks

Hall: “They won’t beat that filly Proxima Dea from Sydney, will they?”

O’Neill: “I reckon Chris Waller’s is a sit-and-steer. Your Colour, it will win.

“I’m $1.90 the place so I’d be rather be backing that to place than Proxima Dea to win at the same price.”

Champions Sprint

Hall: “Joliestar or Tempted? Joliestar the place over Tempted.”

O’Neill: “Tempted will win by half a furlong.”

Champions Mile

Hall: “Autumn Glow. Pride Of Jenni might take her on if she’s alright. That will be interesting.”

O’Neill: “Wouldn’t matter.”

Champions Stakes

Hall: “Cosmic Crusader?”

O’Neill: “If he goes there he’ll win.”
