Matt Reid’s Tuesday best bets at Hobart (03/11)
By Matt Reid
Thoroughbred racing returns to Hobart on Tuesday for the traditional Melbourne Cup Day program. It’s the first meeting at the track since 19 August.
The rail is at +11m, and a fine weather forecast should result in a good-rated surface.

Best bet
Race 7 – 3. Who’s In Dev
Who’s In Dev was a beaten favourite in two starts to open her campaign, before the market abandoned her last start. She went back from the widest barrier there and hit the line very well in a race where the tearaway leader won from the front. She should be at her peak now fourth-up and the stable are firing after a winning treble in Launceston last Friday night.
Best value
Race 4 – 6. Olindah
John of Jane is a deserved favourite in the fourth race, but I have him and Olindah much closer than the market. Olindah was backed as if unbeateable first-up, and that assessment was right, making light work of a maiden field that has subsequently produced multiple winners. Back in trip didn’t suit second-up, but out to 1200m and the big expanses of Hobart should be ideal. I think she’s clearly the biggest danger to the favourite.
Best roughie
Race 8 – 2. Flying Concello
Flying Concello faces her toughest test but has trialled up against some key rivals at Longford recently, where she’s been particularly impressive. She’s a perfect 3/3 at the track, including 2/2 over 1100m. She’s drawn for a lovely run from barrier 2, and the stable has set her for this race. $20 seems an enormous price to see whether she’s up to this class.
