Racing & Sports expert selections.
RACE 1 - KING SPIRIT (6) set a nice platform before the nose defeat here when he raced forward. The shorter sprint shouldn't be an issue in the expected heavy conditions, and he can go one better. MELTDOWN (7) debuts and impressed winning a recent Deagon trial by a space. The inside barrier should advantage and Maloney's booking suggests he's pleasing. BOLD CHANGE (2) debuts and owns a trial win here on the inner track. The local also finds a winnable race. AMBERINGER (11) placed in a Rockhampton Open 2 before spelling and resumes owning a trial win at the track. She will be naturally improved and is likely to push forward. Rates a value chance.
RACE 2 - YOUR TOO GOOD (5) resumed here on the turf with a 1L defeat in Open grade and placed in a 70 on the poly track following. She is ready to win and has a key jockey switch to Maloney. INVINOVICH (3) peaks off a tidy effort at Eagle Farm in a CL3. The premier hoop is reunited and has won x2 on the gelding. Go close finding his best. THELWELL (1) resumes owning a Deagon trial win. He's won 2/3 at this course/distance and maps well. He deserves plenty of consideration. The sppedy LAYDOWNLILY (7) resumes and has won fresh. She's showing plenty and will be naturally improved. 2x winning rider Brooker is booked.
RACE 3 - Gollan-trained NO BRAKES (6) impressed when beaten 1.4L from a wide gate at Ipswich on debut and then was slow away again and disappointed at Doomben starting at $3.50. The mile should be ideal now and the premier hoop sticks aboard. Expect quick improvement. SHABOOH SHALAA (8) had been well-trialled but needed the run here on debut. Stepped up to this distance at Doomben following and it was a tidy effort. Fitter and he won't have to be much improved to threaten. VERMILION KIRIN (9) met some trouble this trip at Doomben but held his form and he's worth another chance. BETATHANEVA (12) peaks and is ready to win. The awkward barrier is the niggle. BUFFETT (2) who has been switched from Sydney by the Waller barn looking for easier pickings. Maps well and Maloney's booking interests. QUEEN OF DARK (16) is third-up with more to offer at the mile.
RACE 4 - Competitive. SINGER SARGENT (7) was within range twice at Doomben and then stepped up to this trip here and won the 62 as expected. He's been giving away starts but a gun hoop stays aboard and he can go on with the job. GOOGAZ (5) missed a whisker at Ipswich in a 65 and followed with a 1L defeat at Doomben over 1660m in stronger class. Has to lug more weight but he maps for the run of the race and Maloney is a key jockey switch. Peak and is a live chance. BIG TICKET BOY (11) was back to his best when beaten 1.5L at Doomben over the 1640m. He also maps well and the extra metres suit. Fitter and looks suitably placed. CAPE CRUSADER (9) always puts in and his Doomben effort last start stacks right up. He also has claims. COLLEAGUES (1) likes it wet and drops in grade with a 2kg claimer booked. Respect the barn.
RACE 5 - MEAT PIE ARTIE (1) tackles this journey for the first time. He was never a chance in the Winx Guineas two back but he's showing plenty of promise and maps well. MIGHTY JUDD (7) stepped up to 1710m at Ipswich and didn't have the best of luck when beaten 2.5L as a $3 favourite. He's well into his preparation but keeps fronting. Gets another chance. FARWEST (6) was well supported at Doomben but disappointed (vet cleared). His placing at Eagle Farm prior over this distance reads well. He will need some luck in the run but is going well enough to feature. Orman is booked for PICKAXE (2) and a bounce isn't out of the question. HIGHLAND HILL (4) is a former Victorian better for the two runs for the new barn. He has more to give but the rails gate needs managing.
RACE 6 - Gollan-trained BIG DEMEANOR (1) missed a whisker heavily bet at Rockhampton first up and was expected to win at Doomben following but things didn't work out. He has more to give and the 2kg claimer can use the rail. Fitter and is ready to win. ASSEMBLE (8) was only beaten 2.2L at Ipswich off a trial win and will be better for it. She rates well and should be ready to fire. DEEP DAWN (11) is a leader who was well supported at Ipswich but overpowered close to home. She has plenty up her sleeve and maps to control the race. Gollan-trained and goes in at a price. MORE FOR READY (7) was a big trial winner but looked in need of the Doomben outing first-up. She's fitter and has shown enough to consider. PRINCESS MONEYBAGS (9) is third-up and a sharper effort is likely. Orman sticks aboard and that's a positive lead.
RACE 7 - Competitive. NEW HAMPSHIRE (5) went close here first-up after the switch from a Victorian barn. He goes second-up and has more up his sleeve. Maps well and Orman is a key jockey switch replacing the apprentice. BRIGHT BLONDE (8) was safely held at Ipswich but this is easier and will present at peak fitness. She can win and look for her late. BEEN A SECRET (7) is an improver in good hands. She can build on the heavily bet Maiden win on the poly and draws better after the scratchings. SIBELIUS (15) has been around the mark since the Maiden win. JGC rode and is reunited. Respect the stable. BEAUTANTES (1) peaks and isn't out of this. Has to go in.
RACE 8 - I AM ARTIE (8) brought strong form to resumption and spaced the 62 graders here. He races forward and the gun hoop rides the first time. Fitter and he looks capable of taking the next step. KEMI ZABI (5) resumes for the premier barn with a handy 2kg claim and is proven fresh. He will be naturally improved and maps well. He's been off the scene for a while so the late betting will be key. POWER OF THE BRAVE (3) had excuses at Eagle Farm and his Randwick and effort prior in a 72 reads well. Handles heavy ground and he'd win at best. LITTLE VISTA (6) didn't have much luck here last time but impressed her prior beaten a whisker when he led. That effort would see him competitive at a big price.
