The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt Coulthard followed his promising late-closing fourth in a 2YO Maiden (1300m) at Wyong on 23 February, when racing on debut, to score a narrow but good win here. He began well from his inside barrier (1) and settled nicely in fourth place on the rails before getting through on the inner to take the lead on passing the 200m. He then fought back strongly to score, running the 1400m out well. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained colt Zeppelin was fourth early on before making a mid-race move. He was then eased after being caught deep to travel in third spot, moved up to challenge on straightening and then fought gamely for a very good second, going well at only his second race start. Medal Kun led but was pressured in the middle stages before regaining the lead at the 600m. He then battled strongly in the straight for a close up third in a very sound effort under his (58kg) top weight.
