The Gai Waterhouse-trained mare Diamond Drille was ridden quietly and settled eighth, one off the rails, following a strong early pace (first 1000m 58.64). She was pushed back to near last nearing the turn, switched wide passing the 300m and came with a late run to score a narrow but impressive win. Mahara, who has been racing consistently in weaker classes, ran a great race. She was just past midfield, improved (three deep) nearing the home turn, took a narrow lead at the 200m and fought gamely for a (short neck) second. Danesiri missed the start and was a clear last in the early stages. She moved up wide with cover from the 600m, was widest of all rounding the home turn, challenged at the 200m and then fought on for third. It was an excellent effort and she probably would have won with an even start. Intimate Moment travelled wide without cover most of the way. She moved up well approaching the turn and held on well for fourth after working all the way. The favourite Lucky Lago ($4.80) was about seventh with cover, was blocked on straightening, and then battling on in the latter stages for one and three quarter lengths fifth. *ANZ
