Timaru Cup (LR)
This winner of the Listed Open Handicap mile was the evergreen 10yo in Gallant Boy and he clocked a solidly run 1:34.99 to score by half a neck. He trailed fourth the inner then worked off turning for home and drove to the lead at the 250m then hung on to win. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were fourth (one-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), second (two-off the inside and a neck from the leader), third (trailed inner and length and a half from the leader), led (on the inner and a length ahead), third (four-off the inside and half a length from the leader), co-leader (two-off the inside), fourth (two-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), fourth (three-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), sixth (two-off the inside and three lengths from the leader) and led (one-off the inside and two lengths ahead). Today was the fifteenth win in seventy-two starts by Gallant Boy who this season alone has been in cracking form recording two wins and two seconds in four outings. His win today at Listed level goes with his G3 win, G3 placing and Listed placing and he has been also placed twenty-three times plus has run fourth or fifth a further six times each. He is a very in form galloper and belies his age plus he has won from 1200m to 2130m to show genuine versatility. Second home and closing well at the line was Flying Sardine that drifted back to seventh and came up sixth on the home turn before unleashing hard. The 8yo mare reached third at the 100m and second with 10m to go before getting rather close at the line. Third home was Owen Patrick, with the 6yo gelding racing sixth the inner then working off and coming up fifth turning for home. He surged into second at the 200m and looked a winning chance the last 200m with his final margin of defeat being half a neck and half a neck. Fourth home and going huge was the three-win galloper Whale Song that ran home powerfully from last on settling and being the widest runner turning for home. He was beaten less than two lengths and was slow out so probably and should have won this race, his first attempt at Blacktype plus he was ridden by an apprentice today too. Beneficial was fifth home after settling down third last and being wide across the top. The 6yo mare ran on the last bit to finish fifth and be beaten almost four lengths. Sixth home was I Am A Rock that raced third the outer in solidly run race before wilting the run home to be beaten four lengths. Seventh home was Killarney that led out then was headed and a chasing second back a length and half to two lengths until closing to a neck turning for home then leading at the 350m. He weakened once headed at the 200m into third then was run over further to finish seventh and beaten over four lengths. Six lengths away in eighth place came Who Dares Wins, which raced ninth the outer and came up eighth and wide on the home turn. The rest were beaten over six lengths and as far as just over ten lengths with the best of those efforts being All About Magic that got held up at the 200m when last so is a forgive. This was a solidly run event as the winning time saw 1:35 broken and it was the fastest time of the day by almost a second and a half (nine lengths). The oldest horse in the race won this and from second equal oldest runner.
