The Tony McEvoy-trained colt Despatch put up a promising effort in winning here on debut. He began well and settled outside the leader (Majestueux) going at a good tempo. He moved up well on straightening, went to the front at the 300m and then lasted for a narrow but sound win after working in the early stages. His stablemate Nistaan was a bit slow to move, settled back in sixth place, one off the rails, before making a wide move rounding the home turn. He then came with a strong run for a late-closing second in a very smart effort, also on debut. The favourite, the Lindsay Park-trained colt American Genius was quickly away, settled in fourth place (one out and one back), went deep at the home turn and then kept battling on quite well for third after seeming to have every chance.
