The Bel Esprit colt Iconic made it two wins and a second from three starts in taking out this rich VOBIS Gold Rush. He travelled comfortably outside the leader Beleeup, went to the lead at the 300m then had to dig deep to hold off late challengers to win by a short head, from the dead-heaters for second Trust In A Gust and Hard Stride. Trust In A Gust had a nice trip from barrier two being fifth on the rails, getting an inside run passing the 200m then fighting on in a close finish to dead-heat for second. Hard Stride began well but was caught four wide. He moved up in the centre of the track on turning for home and ran on gamely, failing narrowly in a photo, putting up a very good effort after racing very wide on debut. He’s a promising colt. Another firststarter Tonyboy showed good pace being third, three wide, to the turn before holding on for a sound fourth. The favourite Se Sauver ($2.40) had a good run being about fifth one off the rails to the turn, she got into the clear on straightening, then fought on for a close fifth, after seeming to have every chance. *ANZ
