Blue Diamond Stakes (G1)
Darley’s top class filly Earthquake is now unbeaten in three starts, putting up another impressive effort to take out this Group One event. She began well then eased from her wide barrier (15) to travel three deep with cover in sixth place. She switched out on straightening, hit the lead on passing the 200m and then drew away to win by length and a half in a dominant performance. The Mick Price-trained colt Jabali was third on the rails after beginning well from his good barrier (3). He got into the clear at the 200m and then battled on in game fashion for a good second, his third such placing in all his three starts to date. His stablemate Cornrow was about eighth, between runners, to the turn. He switched around heels at the 200m and then kept fighting on for a promising third. Rubick began well and showed good pace to race outside the leader (Nayeli). He briefly looked the winner when he dashed clear of that filly on straightening but he was soon headed on passing the 200m to finish fourth, not finding a lot after going quick in the early stages (first 600m 34.19). Boomwaa was caught three deep outside the leading trio from his wide barrier (13) and he held on quite well for a sound fifth after a tough trip. The winner’s stablemate Mohave was handy all the way and held on for a sound sixth while Nostradamus was just past midfield, three wide with cover, before battling on for seventh. Chivalry did not show any early pace and raced in last place in the 16-horse field to the turn. He made ground in the latter stages for eighth. He is a promising colt who should appreciate further. The Gai Waterhouse-trained filly Nayeli showed good pace leading the field to the turn but she then dropped out after working early to finish second last. *ANZ
