Herbert Power (G2)
Big Memory enjoyed a perfect trip from his inside barrier travelling nicely in third spot on the rails, following a solid tempo. He got a rails run to hit the lead rounding the home turn but then veered out suddenly causing inconvenience to Bonfire and Signoff before taking the lead again. He then fought back well to score by a long neck and also survived a protest from the runner-up. Signoff was handily placed racing in fourth, one out and one back before improving deep on the home turn. He was crowded and inconvenienced on straightening and then kept fighting on for a long neck second. He then protested unsuccessfully against the winner. Let’s Make Adeal was ninth one off the rails, made a wide run from the 600m and kept making ground for a good third, indicating a return to form. The German stayer Protectionist was eighth on the rails, was under riding nearing the turn and kept responding well, steadily making ground to finish a close-up fourth. It was a very pleading effort with his big weight (59kg) and looks right on track for a bold run in the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). Lord Van Percy was near last on the rails to the 600m, switched wide on turning for home and kept running on well for a most encouraging fifth beaten 2.2 lengths at his first Australian start. Bonfire led to the turn, setting a solid pace before being checked at the turn, he then tired for seventh. Sangster (11th) weakened from seventh at the 600m in a disappointing effort while Renew worked hard in the early stages to race outside the leader before tiring for 12th at his first start in this country
