Starsi was quickly away and settled nicely outside the leader (Central Witness). They then slowed the tempo noticeably (first 800m in 52.32) before lifting the pace nearing the home turn. He went to the front at the 200m and then fought back to score quite well, his first win in three starts to date. South Australian-trained Mail It In settled beyond midfield and wide. He improved (three wide) when the pace slackened and then travelled in third spot (three wide without cover) from the 700m. He challenged strongly at the 200m and kept fighting well in the sprint home for a good second. Red Alto began well from his inside barrier (1) and enjoyed a good trip in fourth place on the rails. He got through to third at the 100m and battled on well to hold that position to the post. Precision Timing was smartly away, was third early and then travelled in fifth place between runners from the 600m and kept fighting on in the straight for (1.4 lengths) fourth. Zandarral went quite well on debut. He was sixth, three wide with cover, and battled on soundly in the straight for (2.2 lengths) fifth, being unsuited by the sprint home tactics. Parallel Lines ran on well in the sprint home for sixth while Greddington was shuffled back in the field and made late ground for (4 lengths) seventh, also being disadvantaged by the lack of pace.
