The Mick Price-trained import Pakal scored a good win here and looks set to progress to much better things. He travelled well in a nice spot, seventh on the rails until passing the 600m when the field bunched suddenly and he was shuffled back a bit. However, Glen Boss steered him back to the rails at the turn and he got a clear run on straightening. He hit the lead at the 200m and then drew away for a decisive win, carrying his 60kg top weight to an impressive victory. Sertorius settled in quite a good place, midfield and three wide with cover, despite starting from his difficult outside barrier (14). He improved wide from the 600m, went to the extreme outside at the home turn, challenged at the 200m and then kept battling on well for a good second, putting up a good staying effort. Mourinho was handily placed, sixth one off the rails before improving three wide nearing the home turn. He took the lead on straightening and kept fighting on for a sound third. Bel Thor raced in eighth place one off the rails, switched wide under riding nearing the turn and fought on in the straight for fourth after seeming to have every chance. Star Rolling ($3 favourite) began a little slowly from his wide barrier (12) and was in front of only two runners in the 14-horse field on settling. He made a wide run passing the 600m and put in a quick run to challenge wide-out rounding the home turn before tiring a little in the closing stages, after a difficult trip, for a two and three quarter lengths fifth. *ANZ
