The Sofitel (LR)
Shoreham scored a surprise first-up win, having his first start since third in the SA Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) in May. He began well and settled in a good spot, fifth one off the rails, before improving three wide rounding the home turn. He got to second at the 200m and then finished gamely to grab a half head win at the post. The favourite Dany The fox travelled well in second place, following a moderate early tempo (first 800m 49.51). He moved up well and looked the winner when he took the lead passing the 300m. He only tired in the closing stages for a close second, but he appeared to have every chance. Garud was a handy fourth most of the way to the turn. He challenged at the 300m and then kept battling on nicely for a sound third. Hvasstan, also resuming after racing in the SA Derby in May, ran a bold race. He was about eighth, wide with cover, and improved well on turning for home to challenge at the 300m. He then kept fighting on nicely for a good fourth. He should improve and will appreciate longer distances. Cosmic Causeway was near last to the 600m and ran on quite well for fifth, just beating Pago Rock (sixth) who was handy all the way and seemed to have every chance while Mutual Trust caught the eye running on late from the tail of the field at the 300m for eighth, beaten just under two lengths. *ANZ
