Emirates Stakes (G1)
Boban remained unbeaten in his five runs this preparation, the reformed four-year-old recording his second Group One race, despite stepping up in the weights (57kg). Glyn Schofield settled him a little closer from his good barrier (3) and then eased him to race about ninth, between runners. He angled into the clear passing the 300m, took a little while to wind up under his weight, but he kept responding to grab a gutsy half neck win. Smokin’ Joey raced midfield, three wide with cover, before moving up wide out at the turn. He challenged at the 200m and kept fighting on very gamely for close second, putting up a surprisingly good effort. Speediness had a nice trip about seventh, between runners. Craig Williams got him into the clear nearing the 300m and he looked the winner when he dashed clear at the 100m, only to be caught right on the post for a close third. Mull Of Killough raced outside the leader (Rhythm To Spare), went to a narrow lead on straightening, then battled on quite well for a sound fourth. Sacred Falls was about eighth, one off the rails, most of the way to the 600m. He fanned wide at the 400m and kept fighting on for fifth while Toydini enjoyed a good trip and seemed to have every chance before finishing sixth. Rhythm To Spare (seventh) held on quite well after leading to the 400m, Strike The Stars (eighth) made good ground, late, putting up a good effort in coming from last at the 400m and is looking for longer. Spurtonic (ninth) was handy all the way and looked to have every chance while Nashville (tenth) also made some late ground, without threatening. *ANZ
