Australian Cup (G1)
Spillway settled well in tenth place, one off the rails, before improving (wide with cover from the 700m). He switched deep on entering the straight and made a quick run, going to third at the 200m. He hit the front at the 100m and then fought back to score by the narrowest of margins. His stablemate Extra Zero, a $101 chance, really surprised. He settled at the tail of the 16-horse field after starting from the outside barrier. He got between runners at the 300m, sprinted quickly and went to fourth at the 150m and finished well for (short half head) second, his 17th second placing in his 73-start career. Favourite Happy Trails was back in 12th place before switching out at the 400m. He looked a threat at the 100m and then fought on for third, beaten a length and a quarter. The Cleaner went to the front at the 1400m and ran along at a solid pace, as usual. He then fought back gamely in the straight for (2.4 lengths) fourth, putting up a good effort at his second run this preparation. Red Cadeaux was seventh, wide with cover. He was under riding on turning for home and kept fighting on for a good (2.5 lengths) fifth, at his first run since racing in Hong Kong in December. Entirely Platinum led early then raced in second place (behind The Cleaner). He moved up strongly at the 300m and looked a winning chance, before fighting on for (2.6 lengths) sixth. Akzar was second last in 15th place to the home turn. He went wide on turning for home and made good ground for (2.8 lengths) seventh. Protectionist settled 13th between runners. He was under riding on straightening and made steady ground for (4.6 lengths) eighth. It was his second run since winning the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) in November and will appreciate stepping up further in distance.
