John Sadler-trained three-year-old Most Wanted put up a good effort to win here on debut. After beginning a little slowly, Damien Oliver drove him through from his good barrier (4) to settle fifth on the rails. He then got along the rails on straightening to hit the front at the 200m. He then fought on to win well, putting up a nice effort. It was also an excellent ride by Damien Oliver. Jacksay was slowly away, was near the rear in the early stages before recovering along the rails to settle in ninth place. He switched deep at the 400m, got to fourth at the 200m and kept finishing well for second, putting up a good performance. Bon Aurum went to the front and set as average pace (first 800m 49.82). He then fought on quite well when challenged in the straight, holding on for a sound third. Red Alto raced outside the leader most of the way to the home turn and held on for (2.3 lengths) fourth. South Australian-trained Colonel Custer began well but then worked in the early stages, being caught three wide without cover outside the leading pair. He was under pressure from the 400m and battled on for (4.3 lengths) fifth after a difficult trip.
