Sportingbet Manikato Stakes (G1)

Age: 3yo and up Type: OPEN

An exciting finish with only three quarters of a length separating the first eight horses at the post. The winner Lankan Rupee began brilliantly from his wide barrier (9) and was ridden vigorously by Craig Newitt to cross to the lead. He was then able to steady the tempo a bit after running his first 600m in a very fast 33.53. He was challenged approaching the home turn but grabbed a break on straightening and although tiring after his early efforts, held on gamely to score by a short head. Angelic Light was checked in the early stages with Damien Oliver doing well to recover and settled the mare in fifth place. She was blocked on turning for home, got a split at the 100m and finished well to just miss in a photo to finish (short head) second. Famous Seamus was crowded in the early stages and settled in second last place on the rails. He looked for a run in the centre at the home turn, got a late split and then finished well for an unlucky third. Rebel Dane was a bit slowly away and then got through to settle in seventh spot on the rails. He remained there to the turn and was blocked from that point, finally getting clear at the 75m and then finished well for an unlucky (0.3 lengths) fourth. Terravista raced in about eighth place between runners, pushed into the clear rounding the home turn and kept running on well to finish (0.4 lengths) fifth. Temple Of Boom was fourth early on but was pushed three deep at the 700m, he challenged nearing the turn and fought on well for (0.5 lengths) sixth. Buffering was well away but was beaten for pace by Lankan Rupee and raced outside that horse from the 700m. He challenged nearing the turn and continued to fight gamely to finish (0.6 lengths) seventh. Moment Of Change was back about tenth, one off the rails, made a very wide run from the 600m and fought on well for a good first-up (0.8 lengths) eighth.
