Godolphin-raced colt Tally is now a winner of all four starts this preparation and he was most impressive in scoring again here. He settled particularly well in eighth place on the rails, improved between runners from the 700m and then tracked up behind the favourite (Palentino) before challenging (wide out) nearing the home turn. He got to the front at the 100m and then drew clear to score a very good win, looking suited to further still. The Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Palentino settled in seventh place, one off the rails, before moving up (three wide) from the 700m. He challenged strongly coming to the home turn, took a narrow lead on straightening, was headed at the 100m and then fought on well for second, just finding the winner too good in stepping up to 2040m here. The $61 outsider Hardern raced in fourth place, made a good run to challenge approaching the home turn and then battled gamely for a really promising third. The Mick Kent-trained Charlevoix was last in the ten-horse field before improving from the 600m. He then continued to make ground, running on for a promising fourth at only his third race start, looking suited to longer.
