The Gerald Ryan-trained filly Peggy Jean settled in a midfield position, with cover, following a fast early pace (first 600m 33.74). Kerrin McEvoy brought her into the race, deep from the 600m, travelling well. She was giving the leader about four lengths topping the rise, moved to second at the 200m and then finished too well to score a short neck win, putting up a good performance at her second race start. The Victorian visitor Boomwaa ($2.30 fav) showed his renowned pace and held a clear break on the field most of the way to the home turn. He still held a clear advantage at the 200m but was caught nearing the post to finish a sound second after his early efforts. The Noel Mayfield-Smith trained filly Unequivocal was back in tenth place, wide with cover to the 600m. She switched deep on straightening and made good ground for a most encouraging third on debut. La Bella Rouge ($51) was second last in the 13-horse field to the 600m and then went to the extreme outside at the turn. She kept making ground in the straight for fourth, beaten just under five lengths, putting up a nice run at her second start. The New Zealand-trained colt Vinnie Eagle ($2.60, 2nd fav) showed a lot of pace from his wide barrier (13) and worked across to second place, chasing the tearaway leader. But he was under pressure shortly after turning for home and then dropped out to finish tenth, suffering his first defeat in three starts. *ANZ
