The Queensland-trained Shogun Sun was a surprise winner at $20 but he staged a promising effort nevertheless. Having his second run this preparation, he travelled well in fourth place on the rails before getting a split at the 200m. He then took the lead at the 100m and went on to score comfortably. The favourite Addictive Nature was smartly away, went to the front but was pressured in the early stages. He was challenged on turning for home and then held on quite well for second after working in the early stages. Solar Patch raced outside the leader (Addictive Nature) and fought on nicely for third after putting pressure on that runner. Wild Heart was a handy fourth, challenged at the 200m and then battled on to hold (1.8 lengths) fourth. The second favourite Brave Song was fifth, one off the rails, before improving (deep) nearing the home turn. He made a short-lived bid at the 300m before battling on for (3.1 lengths) fifth, racing below expectations on the Soft 7 track.
