Sacred flyer ($3.50 fav) began well from his difficult barrier (12) and worked wide early before Glyn Schofield managed to ease him into a good spot, fourth one out and one back at the 1400m. He remained in that position, following a moderate tempo (first 1400m 1:29.82), before moving up wide at the turn. He got to a narrow lead at the 200m and fought on nicely to score narrowly but well. Winning Glory soon led and was able to set a moderate pace until challenged in the straight. He then fought back particularly well for a good second. Lucripetous was last to the home turn, stuck to the rails on straightening, and kept making ground along the rails for a good third while the top weight Illo was midfield on the rails to the 600m, improved to be in a challenging position (still on the rails) at the 200m and then fought on for a sound fourth, beaten one length. *ANZ
