Hobartville Stakes (G2)
Dissident scored his second win in ten starts, putting up a good effort in this Group Two event. Jim Cassidy settled him outside the leader (Romantic Touch), travelling at an average pace (first 800m 48.88). He challenged at the 300m and then kept battling on well with Cassidy lifting him in the closing stages to win by a head. The NZ colt Atlante made a good Australian debut on the Slow7 track especially considering that he is suspect in wet conditions. He was third on the rails and was under riding by Glyn Schofield nearing the turn. But he kept responding and challenged at the 200m and then battled gamely for second. He should be improved by this first-up run and looks set for a good preparation. Savvy Nature was back in fifth place on the rails most of the way to the turn. He switched between runners on straightening and kept making ground for a most pleasing first-up third, beaten a length and a half. Woodbine ($3.40 fav) was trapped deep in the early stages and eased to settle back in sixth place, one off the rails following a moderate tempo. He switched wide nearing the 300m and made ground late, in the sprint home, for fourth, beaten a length and three quarters. The maiden Swiggin’ ($81) was second last in the eight-horse field to the 600m. He saved ground along the rails rounding the turn and battled on surprisingly well for fifth. He should prove hard to beat when he returns to easier company. Romantic Touch ($5.50) led the field until the 300m but then weakened to finish sixth. *ANZ
