Bacardi Maurice McCarten Stks (G3)
The John O’Shea-trained four-year-old Kencella made it six wins from nine starts with a dashing front-running performance to win this Group Three event. He was smartly away, soon crossed to the lead, lifting the tempo from the 600m. He opened big break once into the straight and then battled on well to win by a length and a quarter. The three-year-old Va Pensiero settled in a good spot, third, following a solid pace. He was under a bit of pressure at the home turn but kept fighting on well in the straight for a good first-up second. That’s A Good Idea ($2.90 fav) was slowly away and settled a distant sixth in the small eight-horse field. He was giving the leader about eight lengths at the 600m, put in a run in the centre of the track from the 300m and made good ground for a sound third, beaten a length and three quarters, after having things go against him today. Flamberge ($5.50) settled back in fourth place, following a good tempo. He was giving the leader about six lengths nearing the home turn and just kept battling on in the straight for fourth, after having every chance. Diamond Oasis, a three-year-old stablemate of the winner, was back in fifth place to the turn and fought on nicely to hold that position to the post, beaten two and three quarter lengths. *ANZ
