George Ryder Stakes (G1)
The classy Irish galloper Gordon Lord Byron landed his third Group One in game fashion at his Australian debut. He began well and eased to settle in eighth place, between runners. He improved passing the 300m, Craig Williams switched him to the rails at the 200m and he then finished resolutely to win, going away, by a long neck. Speediness settled just past midfield on the rails. He stuck to the rails, saving considerable ground at the home turn, got to the lead half-way down the straight and looked the winner when clear at the 100m, only to be overhauled nearing the post for second. Smart NZ colt El Roca began quickly from his wide barrier (11) and soon crossed to the lead. He led the field until passing the 200m and battled on well for a good third, beaten a length. Sacred Falls had a good trip, sixth on the rails. He got an inside run at the turn and kept fighting on for fourth, after seeming to have every chance. Toydini was near last to the 600m and made good ground along the rails in the straight for fifth, finishing narrowly in advance of his stablemate Streama who was fifth to the turn and held on for sixth. Boban was well back to the home turn and ran on in the latter stages for seventh. The favourite Red Tracer ($3.75) was seventh, wide with cover, looked a good chance when she switched out at the turn but failed to run on in the straight and finished tenth, beaten six and half lengths. *ANZ
