It was impossible to win from too far away turning for home, as is always the case at Arawa Park when the footing presented is decent. The eight winners at this meeting and where they turned for home in order were fifth (two and a half lengths from leader), led, fifth (three lengths from leader), fourth, second, fifth (two lengths from lead), led and led. This G3 over 1215m at WFA saw a length and three-quarters cover the first seven over the line and just over four lengths cover the whole field at the finish. The first three on settling formed the trifecta to highlight the track bias. The finish was tight with the first four home separated by less half a length. Volks Lightning led up and she was allowed to get away with modest sectionals so sprinted the final 400m and fell in at the line to score by a nose in 1:11.01. The 6yo mare is a shy winner having last saluted in January of 2017 so today, her fifth win from twenty-five starts was a long time between drinks. Indecision sat outside the leader and almost got up while the clear favourite Julius was third a long head back only. He began awkwardly so was last initially then went up fifth wide before getting over third the outer and was third at the 200m still. It took the big horse en eternity to wind up but he maintained his record of having never missed paying a dividend. Volpe Veloce kept coming to be a very close up fourth after racing sixth the outer between runners but she too was like Julius in taking ages to wind up as she reached fourth at the 200m, so had time to reel them in. Santa Monica was the worst runner situated under the WFA scale but ran on late from last down the outer to be beaten just under a length and a quarter. Untamed Diamond fought on okay for sixth and Ronchi did okay for seventh after being second last away. Love Affair is a total forgive after being fourth away she lost her place and ended up eighth or ninth and in an awful position surrounded. She ran on to be beaten just over two lengths but they could not win all day from that far back turning for home. The last two home blew out but will be improvers as not beaten out of sight. This race was run in a modest time only and the race before this was a Benchmark72 (four or five grades inferior) and clocked 1:10.66 or over two lengths superior. Lot of forget they went around types in this and if run a tad harder to the home turn then Julius and Volpe Veloce probably quinella the event. Put this race and result down purely to track bias.
