This Listed Open Handicap over 1950m saw a 6yo mare that was just four-race winner in Sweet Treat cause an upset at $43 and relish the mud. The track bias was towards runners several widths off the inside lanes on a tricky heavy track. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were co-leader (two-off the inside), fourth (five-off the inside and one length from the leader), sixth (five-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), fourth (six-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), second (four-off the inside and a neck from the leader), eleventh (seven-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), fourth (six-off the inside and two lengths from the leader) and tenth (ten-off the inside and three lengths from the leader). Sweet Treat before today had run in an Open Handicap once and finished second last beaten over twenty-eight lengths, so she was not off that class in reality and her record proved as much. Then today she runs in her second ever Open Handicap and first ever Blacktype event and low and behind wins it. It was one of those results that automatically goes into the X Files as there is no sane explanation of how it happened and it makes no sense whatsoever. The winner of her first Open Class attempt in September was Charlie Horse, which she got 1.5kg from, and officially was beaten twenty eight and a half lengths. Charlie Horse carrying 1.5kg more than her again, runs second today to Sweet Treat beaten three-quarters of a length and that is form that should not just stump bettors but deter as it cannot happen surely in the space of a month. Sweet Treat raced sixth mostly and then eighth across the top then came through closest in at the 400m to be second turning for home. The 6yo mare led at the 250m and held them all out to clock 2:06.57 and win her fifth race from forty starts. Charlie Horse settled down ninth and came through closer in to fourth across the top and he led turning for home only to be headed at the 250m. He fought hard the six-win gelding and he has been in good wet track form since June. Strolling Vagabond has not won a race for over a year and in recent starts has changed stable and the 7yo mare has run well with today adding a Listed third on her resume after trailing handy the inner all the way. Today was her seventh attempt at Blacktype and after six misses she gets a Listed third and that again confirms how weak this race really was. Pacorus ran an honest fourth beaten two lengths after racing in that sport then being seventh across the top hitting a flat sport before coming through fourth turning for home. Cossack Warrior at his first ever Open Class outing and of course Blacktype attempt finish fifth beaten three and a half lengths after settling down tenth. Most of this field after this were going up and down on the same spot the run home with barely anything making any ground on the sludgy holding ground and some known wet trackers could not handle the very unique Rotorua mud. Zacada, the topweight and a proven commodity, settled back on the inner then dropped out sharply across the top and was pulled up with cardiac arrhythmia. This was a thoroughly weak field and mostly a blatantly out of form one so was not really Listed status whatsoever and the awful footing made for some upsets all day. Four of the eight-race card today went to double-figure priced winners and Sweet Treat was not the roughest at $43 with a $50 winner scoring in the race straight after her to further pole-axe punters pockets. This was not a Listed race and should struggle to retain its status and to show it so even more, there was no surprise that at her very next start after today that Sweet Treat would revert to type and she ran last of thirteen in a Benchmark 85 (three grades inferior) beaten eight lengths.
