This Listed 3yo only race saw a return to winning form by the North Island trained filly Cornflower Blue that had run a brave fourth after a wide trip at Listed level prior to today. In this event she sat fifth the inside early before being worked off the fence to be fourth the outer across the top and then was moved up third wide before the home turn to leave nothing to chance. She strode to lead at the 300m and after a tussle, with the eventual runner up that had soon worked to the lead, won by a long neck in 1:23.48. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were led (three-off the inside and a neck in front), fourth (five-off the fence and two and a half lengths from the leader), sixth (one-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), led (one-off the inside and a length ahead), second (two-off the inside and a neck from the leader), eighth (four-off the inside and five lengths from the leader), second (four-wide off the inside and a neck from the leader), third (four-off the inside and a quarter of a length from the leader), eighth (seven-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the leader) and led (one-off the inside and a length ahead). It was her second win in four outings and her first success at Blacktype. Embers, a last start maiden winner, soon led and once headed at the 300m fought hard to the line for a valuable Blacktype placing in what was her first attempt at such a level. Matchmaker, which started favourite, raced fifth the outer and then got pushed wide momentarily by the eventual winner coming off the fence across the top. She got back in fifth the outer and came up fourth wider turning for home before running on to get third the final 50m though was almost two and a half lengths from the winner. Fourth home was Watchmaker, which sat back second last the outer then swept up the widest near the home turn and was fifth and deepest turning in. He surged and was third at the 300m before ending up fourth the final 50m and it was a game performance. Four lengths back in fifth place was Laced With Gold, which ran sixth the inner mostly and was following the winner early on. Eva James finished sixth but was beaten almost eleven lengths and stopped from the trail third the inner while Walkthiswey raced second the outer and was gone the run home to be beaten almost thirteen lengths. The only other finisher was the maiden Florentina that raced third last on the inner and was last in a gap turning for home. Showemhowitsdone was hampered and lost its rider near the home turn from seventh in the running while Zoltan, clipped a heel and fell just before the home turn. The first four home were dominant but the trouble on the home turn did not help matters.
