The Listed 1100m saw a good finish with the first five over the line covered by a length. Caellum since returning from Queensland is unbeaten in New Zealand in two outings this campaign and now has a Listed win on the resume. The 7yo was getting outclassed and found out in Queensland at Class Six and Benchmark 85 and in his last seven outings had finished fifth twice, sixth three times and seventh two times. Clearly the depth in New Zealand is way inferior as now he is as Listed winner and will chase G1 on January 1 at Ellerslie. It was his seventh win in thirty-seven starts and from a sixth at the 300m seemingly one-batting with others he got his second wind and surged to lead at the 50m. He won by half a length in 1:04.89 to bury a game leader in Statham, which had worked a bit early to burn to the front after 300m. Riding Shotgun ran home stoutly too late for third after settling back as usual. Whosyourmaster was an eyecatcher late one-off for fourth from last on settling and he did like the cut out of the ground. Fascination Street came through closer in the run home and was third momentarily at the 50m before being swamped into fifth and she is close to another win. Fast Dragon ran a ripper as he needs a lot further than 1100m but showed dash and fight, so is in for a good Christmas-New Year period if kept racing in New Zealand. Durham Town showed dash before blowing out late and is an improver plus he has always taken a run or two to peak in the past. Vibrant Moss ran on late and in an easier field would be a win chance. Aaja Nachle showed dash but punctured very quickly the run home and is very hard to follow. Hannah Mary did not show her usual dash but will likely improve out of this while Adrenaline Rush was outclassed but not disgraced being beaten just over six lengths. The sprinting depths in New Zealand are an all time low if Caellum, which could not pay a dividend in his last seven runs in Class Six and Benchmark 85 in Queensland, can win a Listed race like today and aspire for G1 honours. He is a 7yo thriving since coming home for much easier depth but we will have to see when he strikes a real deal Group sprinting field if in fact the depth is not here anymore. Statham is handy but the 6yo is a not a top tier sprinter or even second tier for that matter. Riding Shotgun and Whosyourmaster ran on well and will progress further this summer with the latter a Group sprinter at peak. Fast Dragon the biggest improver while the 8yo Durham Town has come up well again it seems. Not many of these would be competitive in the top shelf sprints at Ellerslie and Trentham bar Whosyourmaster in the right track conditions.
