Manawatu Challenge Stakes (G3)

Type: OPEN

This was an atrocious field for a G3 at WFA and no surprise in the first two home as they were the only pair with some form of note under this scale. Only eight runners contested the event and the former Hong Kong reject and almost retired old galloper Pure Champion sat outside the pacemaking mare Diademe and outfinished her after a stirring duel the run home. Pure Champion was the only G1 winner in the field and it came at WFA so he should beat this sort of line up every time. He won that G1 at Hastings earlier this spring and has also since ressurecting his career in New Zealand been G1 placed at WFA and now can add a G3 win at WFA. The flood of Hong Kong reject gallopers and older comeback or injured gallopers is well and truly underway in New Zealand and will soon be an avalanche. After being uncompetitive at home for several starts they can now come to New Zealand for far inferior depth and start earning again with the most glaring fact nowadays is being able to win at G1. It is a staggering fact and has not gone unnoticed by many trainers and owners in Hong Kong that have horses they thought were finished as racing propositions but now have an avenue to earn. Pure Champion was in a ding donger the run home with Diademe and gained the upper hand late to win in 1:23.21, which is not a great time at all. Diademe was fresh up but very forward after trials and tried hard. She had not raced since last February when third under WFA behind Viadana and Sacred Star, with the key form thing being the winner was found out many times in Australia and the latter never came up this spring. This mare however will find earning at home a dream as more races to contest and gets handicap relief due too her sex even though they are the dominant racing yardstick in all of New Zealand racing. Ginner Hart kept coming for third after getting a dream sit the outer but is and in and out type and hard to trust. The other runners are wet trackers in the main with the lone excuse that could be made coming for the last placed Waikaha. The bunched finished is a worry as it says no stars here and Waikaha may be a handicapper only but she did get checked early and lacked clear room the closing stages. She is the one that can do something at handicap level this season at stakes level. The run of Hong Kong rejects or old comeback gallopers from injury and/or a lack of form does continue in New Zealand. It will soon be a source for many more yards, as the difference in actual depth is vast on an already massive pile of winning and earning proof.
