This meeting was supposed to be held at Otaki but was moved to Awapuni two days later and the track as usual was a holding bog. This Listed juvenile 1200m drew a small field and one lacking much depth at all with four maidens (one was late scratched at the start) and one of those was on debut and had never even officially trialled plus one was a South Islander. The race was not helped by being delayed for over 4 minutes due to a maiden not loading up and eventually it was scratched but not before many had been standing idle in the gates cooling down for 2-3 minutes. That is unacceptable in this day and age of perception for a blacktye race let alone any race. The eight runners that ran saw the favourite and one of just two males in the race namely Waldorf prove superior after sitting outside the leader, which finished runner up. Waldorf once he got urged to come alongside the leader and compete at the 100m drew away to win by length and a half in 1:17.36. It was his second win in seven starts and his first at Stakes level. He has only been out of the money twice in his career and tellingly they have come on dry footing, so wet ground or at least substantial cut in the footing seems his future. Nuclear Fusion gained a massive advantage pre-start when able to be kept moving and loaded up last after the trouble maker finally was ordered scratched. The filly disputed the pace before taking the lead after 300m and tried to give a kick the run home only for the favourite to overcome her the final 100m. Style By Design from fourth the inner ran on well for third and like the top two had won a race prior to today. She was just under a length and a half behind the runner up but tellingly was five and a half lengths clear of the distant fourth finisher Belltoy, a maiden that was tardy then seen to be running on. Veuve Cliquot was poor after trailing to be beaten ten lengths. The rest got beaten almost fifteen lengths to over twenty one lengths. Very dubious depth and the delayed start was a factor too along with awful holding footing regards the result. The winner Waldorf looks a deadest wet tracker and his record proves it plus he is suspect until shown otherwise right-handed. The runner up filly is a wet tracker and her win came over the fourth finisher in this, with the third finisher today finishing fourth in that particular race so the so the form is much the same muchness. The fifth finisher today beaten ten lengths won and defeated the runner up when giving her 2kg and today was at set weights to show the form is untrustable and there are so many different types of heavy tracks in New Zealand racing.
