Feilding Gold Cup (LR)

WT: 53kg Type: OPEN

This Listed Open Handicap over 2100m was run on a track that saw seven of the nine winners either come from in front (once) or second the outer (three times) and no worse than a handy fifth turning for home so the track bias was rampant. Maygrove carried topweight of 59kg and after sitting outside the leader took over before the home turn and strode clear. The Australian bred stayer held on to score by a long neck in 2:07.32 and record his eighth win in forty-seven starts. He had not won a race for over a year and only been placed twice in that period too it should be noted. All of his wins have come at 1950m up to and including 2400m. The time was fifteen lengths superior to the Ratings 75 (three classes or more inferior) race run just before this. Alinko Prince was a huge second after being trapped wide worse than midfield and then improving deeper across the top. He strode up third turning for home and kept coming in a dour manner plus was second up and rising 500m. Snow Secret the favourite came from the rear trio on settling and improved deep across the top to turn for home fifth. She sustained her finish to reach third at the 200m and kept coming through the line to now be placed in all her runs this time in so far. Five To Midnight found the drop back from G1 at WFA last time to this much more suitable and finished an honest fourth after sitting handy the outer throughout. Itsallbelt was running on gamely for fifth after being trapped wide in the midfield throughout. All In Vogue was very brave in finishing sixth beaten three lengths as she was third and fourth wide working the whole way so to not give it away was very commendable. Rock On the third favourite steamed home too late for an eyecatching seventh beaten just over three lengths and is a winner in waiting. Balham and Wildflower were okay and Meritaggio was fair but the rest disappointed. This was a largely out of form field but a genuine Listed depth line up across the board. Maygrove found the right track bias and better footing to suit and returned to the winners circle after a long absence from it and the stayer depth in New Zealand has never ever worried this now 7yo gelding He is a dual G2 winner and Listed winner before today too. Alinko Prince has won at Listed level before carrying 57kg so was deadest thrown in at 54kg and the 6yo ran accordingly. Snow Secret has a decent win in her this campaign and the 6yo mare does prefer better footing. Five To Midnight is a Cups player again this season if he sticks to handicap events. Itsallbelt was in form prior to this albeit wet track form and ran home gamely with the cut in the ground obviously enough to keep the 8yo competitive. All In Vogue was super brave while Rock On is the next upper after steaming home too late from the rear and just needs to be let stride earlier as he can sustain a long run. The usual Cups players over Summer and Autumn in New Zealand were seen out today with Rock On especially and Five To Midnight the main duo but Snow Secret and Maygrove will be there or thereabouts too.
