This Listed 1400m Open Handicap saw a reject return home from Singapore score and after Hong Kong domination at all levels it now seems Kranji form is superior too in New Zealand. Magnum had won all his three trials in New Zealand before being sent to Singapore and won four of fifteen starts at Kranji but his last two outings in May of 2017 saw a dramatic wane in form. He was tried in Sydney but never made it to raceday and finally came back to his original yard in New Zealand and now has won at Listed level, something he could not do in Singapore tellingly. The 5yo gelding sat second the outer then led at the 300m and never looked like being headed the run home as many had a shot at him but were unable to overtake. He won by a long neck in 1:23.10 and was recording his fifth win from eighteen starts and just as Hong Kong rejects are finding New Zealand depth very easy including at blackype level it now seems Singapore form is good enough too. Expect a flood of return to senders if it is that easy to find form in New Zealand with either rejected racehorses or injured ones on a comeback or ones that cannot cut the mustard anymore at either Sha Tin, Happy Valley and now Kranji. Ruby Armani stormed home from back and wide for second for her first piece of blacktype and she had tried prior seven times to no avail, so that tells you this was not a strong line up overall. Shadows Cast ran a good third under topweight of 60kg after racing fifth the outer and was only a long head from second. He had found G1 too much twice prior so the drop in depth suited and carrying the weight was not an issue for the gelded son of Per Incanto, the same sire of the winner it should be noted. Heroic Valour the clear favourite was a disappointing fourth beaten almost two and a half lengths. He was kicked up from the ace gate to hold the trail and then impatiently was worked off the inside to challenge before the home turn and in fact led turning in. The 4yo entire then was meekly headed soon after and could not lift thereafter for a very ordinary effort and he now looks one dimensional in that he cannot do any work early so is a sit cold and pounce type. He has not won a race since September of 2016 so has well and truly forgotten what victory is these days and with the current sprinting ranks at an all time low he is in an era where he should be able to score. Heni was not too bad for a mare carrying 59kg and Yearn ran on okay carrying the minimum of 53kg. Prince Of Passion plugged on like Galaxy Miss after both settled back. Sound Works was asked a lot of after an average start to be burned up wide early and lead so no surprise she punctured the run home at this level. Wills Road was fourth and wide before the effort told and he finished second last beaten eight lengths. Mime was a poor last fresh up but under 59.5kg she was sixth and four-wide and had to compound after such an overlander. Suspect depth in this but also a worry that now Singapore Class Three sprinters are able to win at Listed level in New Zealand, The overall depth of New Zealand in the staying, miler and sprinter ranks is so low now it is an international issue as we have dropped completely off the relevance radar. Only the 3yo's late season and mares against their own sex are flying the flag outside New Zealand but very few if any go on with it so are quickly forgotten. Unless some dramatic reform and change happens pronto it could be impossible to climb back up the rungs into the legitimate form category and this pressing concern has not been addressed for most of this century.
